Applying to University. That ultimate quest that every green rookie must undertake if they want to survive out there in the Big Wide World.
Frankly, I'm having trouble lifting the sword.
To be fair, I've set myself some high goals - Oxford is on my application list, as well as three other Russell Group universities (for you Americans, that's our version of your Ivy League). I reckon I can get there too, if I work hard enough, and it's nice to know that some of my teachers think so too.
But to get there, I need a bloomin' good application form. I'm working on it - I've got pretty good GCSE results (nine subjects, no grades below an A), Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh qualifications, several Drama grades attained from the London Academy of Music and Drama, and I'm working on a load more. Gotta have the armour before you can take on the giant, right?
But, as I'm applying for English Literature courses, I reckon I could really do with something to prove I haven't misread the prophecy and come barking up the wrong Oracle's cave.
Here's where you guys come in. Can anyone here recommend a good course or set of classes I should attend in the holidays to bolster my application? Any form of work experience regarding writing of any sort would be welcome too - I'm going to try and apply to a few newspapers to see if they'll let me hang around for a couple of days, or maybe write an article or two for them.
ANY suggestions would be very welcome, but I would really love it if you could let me know of some sort of residential course that would span three or four days away from home (part of my Gold Duke of Edinburgh qualification, which I desperately need to get done, and would prefer to avoid the options involving boring manual labour).
It's rather daunting to think about it now - I'm still only sixteen, and still don't believe I survived GCSEs - but it's time to get my butt in gear and get going. New Year, new challenges, and all new adventures to go on.
Anyone care to point me in the right direction? The dragon ate my map.

ReplyDeleteYou've got some high fgoals there my friend. I never applied to an Ivy League School. I couldn't be bothered to write an essay for one of the three schools I randomly picked to apply for. I got into the other two, and picked the one my bf was at (a good move considering I broke up with me and then met the man who is now my hubby). It hasn't set me back at all, especially now that I've been working for a 'few' years. Heh. But I went into science and I suspect that's a differnt thing all together.
So what year are you expected to start University? A conversation I just had with Miriam about Jennie's age and year have gotten me all confused about the Brittish School system again. :} All I really know is you're years are our grades + 1.
Anyway, I was pointed to the liberary to do research on schools and what not... your teachers may have connections for those jobs you wanted...

Wow. I'd love to help, but I know nothing. I've only had a view semesters of college, and nowhere as cool as Oxford. But good luck!

ReplyDeleteEurgh, Oxford. Why would you want to do that? Lol ;) If I was going to apply to Oxbridge, it'd be Cambridge to do Anglo-Saxon Norse and Celtic (Asnac, as they call it), because that's the way I roll. But I'm not. Maybe when I'm thirty. At the moment, I'm thinking ballet, which as you can imagine can't really wait until I'm thirty.
I like the course at Oxford ... and I've always had stupidly high aspirations for myself. And Oxford is so beautiful and full of crazy English nerds like me ... I'll shut up now xP
