The End of the Line - NaNoWriMo Update, Day 29

Word Count: 58,097
Page Count: 131
Plot Progression: I don't even know any more :P

Well, here we are at the end of the month! Nearly 60k, which isn't bad, and a novel that's certainly not as bad as it could have been.

So many things wrong with it, though, it's nearly driving me mad. However, I am going to have to deal with it. And instead of ranting on about the things that are bad about it, I've made myself list three things that I am proud of in this NaNovel.

1) The multi-stranded plot makes for interesting contrasts and a rather pleasing effect as it all draws together.

2) My characters' dialogue is much better than it has been in many of my previous works.

3) I'm really enjoying getting back into the first-person perspective, and its effect on the story.

Of course, all these things are relative to the novel's status as a first draft, and doubtless I'll feel much better when I come back and improve it in the future. That said, though, this NaNo has been a fantastic experience for me - it's been a challenge, in many ways, but I've pulled through and made the wordcount, been to my first Write In, and had a really really good time.

What about you guys? Have you enjoyed your NaNoveling this month? What are the three best things about your novel? Leave me a comment and let me know!

  1. Congrats!! And YAY!! No matter how much I hate my novels (especially those first drafts), I always feel good when I *finish*. An imminent rewrite might sneer at me, but still...conquered for now! So good on you, Charley!

  2. NaNo is always a good chance to learn new things and such.

    Congratulations on finishing! That is great! And a story with lots of plots is good. They always fix themselves later on, when the characters decide to tell you everything..

    1. Ehehehe, if they ever decide to tell me everything - they keep spouting things that bring in red herrings left right and centre, not to mention the fact that I've half forgotten some of the older plot threads! It'll take some re-organising, sure, but I'm really pleased with it!

  3. OOhhh you got to go to your first Write-in? Awesoem things aren't they - like the two of us talking via e-mail only there's actual writing involved... Anyway. :}

    I need to learn how to define things, because I couldn't tell you what my plot/plots were. :}

    1. Ahehehe, oh it was awesome - Miriam took me to one in London when I was staying over. SO much fun!

      Haha, I know what my plots are . . . they're just . . . tangling. And some are getting lost. They do match up . . . I just have to go back and trace them all and make sure the reader can keep track of them all!

  4. Ignore all of Charley's comments about how useless it is. I would never have known it was a first draft, let alone a NaNo draft.

  5. I'm so glad your NaNo went well! I am sooooo sorry I haven't been around almost all month. My life kinda went haywire on me.... Sorry!!! But, hopefully, I'm back!! Hurrah! So do we get any snippets or tantalizing tidbits from the story? I'd LOVE to read some!

  6. I am very proud of you just for clawing your way to the finish line - I wrote 121 words and then gave up. And I'm sure the thing itself is brilliant - I read a post on Miriam Joy Writes saying just that!

    1. Heh heh, Miriam's post sent me into all sorts of fits of giggly happy-feelings - I honestly had no idea the thing might be viewed as anything other than the NaNovel it was. But then again, authors are terrible judges of their own work, aren't they? ;)

      As for only 121 words, well, there's always next year!
