Eight Ways Writing a Novel Can Broaden Your Horizons - a guest post at the Office of Letters and Light!

In between Adventures in Dress Shopping, Adventures in Sleeping, and Adventures in The Ill-Advised  Art of Cooking Things, I'm afraid I rather lost track of the time in which I planned to write a blog post today.

Luckily, I can point you to something far more awesome.

I approached the lovely people over at the Office of Letters and Light - to those who don't know, these are the incredible breed that run NaNoWriMo, Script Frenzy, and the Young Writers' Program, among other things - about a month ago with a tentative proposition of writing a blog post for them.

And, lovely people that they, are, they said yes. So now you can see Miriam and I, in all our hive-mind-y glory, giving the top eight things that writing novels has taught us. Or, rather, top eight things that are useful in more than simply grounding us very well in the how-to of breaking limbs and correctly specifying the horrors of the Black Death.

Enjoy!

  1. Well, blow me down with a feather! What a pleasant surprise. Serves me right for not following the OLL blog anymore. Good work, Charley and Miriam! I love all this stuff. The only thing better than claiming to know two published authors would be to be one myself, which will come in time.

    1. I bet it will - and I'll be at the front of the line demanding a signed copy ;)

  2. Good stuff! My, my, you girls are very smart. I like this one the best: "Noveling has taught us to make the most of whatever time we have, because even fifteen minutes can be useful." Too true! I'm still trying to learn that.

    1. Haha, so am I! That's Miriam being her usual exceedingly productive self ;)

  3. Good job both of you!

"Noveling has taught us that everyone can be important. Even if they don’t particularly want to be." I like this one. :)

    2. You're very welcome!

Thank you. Is that kinda like "Welcome to the dark side-- we have milk and cookies?" :)
I commented on your post with The Silmarillion video.

    3. Weeeeell . . . I would offer you cookies, but I'm afraid we ate them all. But it's definitely a welcome to the dark side and possible offer of cookies in future ;)

Oooh, did you? I shall whizz over and see!

  4. Oh, dear. Then I shall have to bake some... I do this from time to time on Liam's blog so that the Twysdrns won't kill me (if you see this, Liam, did I spell it right?) How do we all feel about chocolate chip? Or oatmeal scotchies?
So, what sort of things do we do in the dark side... besides attempt world domination and get there first? And critique each others writing? :)

    1. Chocolate chip is safter - some of us have allergies, so we have to be a bit careful!

Well, we do that . . . and play Evil Scrabble, and compare our Evil Armour, and have Evil Sleepover Parties, and cry while watching our favourite TV shows (Evilly) and . . . lots of stuff!

    2. Chocolate chip it is then!
Oh, I love Cut-Throat Scrabble! And Monopoly... though sometimes that can get fairly violent even in reality. What sort of TV do we watch? I don't watch much adult TV at all... Once Upon a Time, Sherlock, Masterpiece Theater (Jane Austen, Marple, Downton Abbey--I've only seen season 1 of Downton). That's about it. But there are plenty of movies I like...
Oh! An Evil Sleepover! How delightfully evil sounding! :)
