That's right - the big project for this year is going to be the beginning of book reviews. Brilliant, right? I finally get around to doing that thing that I used to do but do no longer but have been planning to do properly for the better part of three years.
All sarcasm aside - I'm super excited to get started on this, and even more excited because it means you guys get to join in. You see, for something like this, for once my own self is not sufficient (if ever it had pretentions to being such a thing).
For book reviews, I am going to need something from you. Your souls.
. . . And by that I mean your favourite books, of course. Same thing, after all.
My little list here will likely keep me sated for a few weeks, maybe longer if my work pile mounts up, but nobody wants to watch a video about a book they don't have a lot of interest in. Or a video blogger who isn't interested in taking recommendations.
So, my dear readers, you silent army lurking somewhere behind my view count but never quite making it to the comment boxes, time to screw your courage to the sticky place and offer up your darlings on the altar of my page-lighting, spine-bending, tale-devouring ambition.
Come now, don't be shy. I don't bite. Often . . .

ReplyDeleteThe first is my favoritest book of ever, The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth. It's LGBTQ+ and historical fiction.
The second is the Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy, if you haven't already read them - they seem like exactly your kind of thing. There's 11 looong books, and they're fantasy, and they're about a walking, talking, wise-cracking, impeccably-well-dressed skeleton detective and his teenage assistant. :D
Forgive me if you've read any of these before. Feel free to ignore the ones that you have. :)
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I will shamelessly promote myself and say Fauxpocalypse by eleven different authors, including me. It's a science-fiction anthology with twelve short stories about the end of the world that wasn't.
As for other books, I'll go ahead and say We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill, These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner, Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo, any of the Lunar Chronicles books by Marissa Meyer, Wonder by R.J. Palacio, Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper, Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea, The Fault In Our Stars by John Green, and Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. Just to name a few. ;)
Agreed with the one about about Skulduggery Pleasant. Great series of books.
ReplyDeleteThe other book I would recommend is "Just One Damned Thing After Another" By Jodi Taylor. It follows a Historian who takes a job as a time traveller for a University project, dedicated to accurately recording history. It's one part time travel, one part human drama, one part comedy and I've found myself quite enjoying it.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE MAGGIE STIEFVATER. YOU HAVE MADE A GOOD LIFE DECISION. I'm notorious for starting series and not finishing them as well. Which is bad. Buuuut, there are so many books to try, right?!
ReplyDeleteI don't even know what to suggest! Have you read Holly Black??? Holly Black is THE BEST. She is like a less-awesome version of Maggie Stiefvater, but still, you know, on that kind of line of fabulousness. Seriously I'm only halfway through The Darkest Part of the Forest and it comes out on the 13th and you neeeeeed it.

Less awesome!? So far, I find I like Holly Black's writing style more than Stiefvater's (I read Valiant, Tithe and Ironside yonks ago). Less sap, more fun worldbuilding and a slightly more poetic writing style. Not that i don't love them both dearly, but we'll have to see if The Dream Thieves wins me over hard enough to make me like Stiefvater as much if not more, ehehehe!

Looks like you got a great Christmas book haul--and AAH MAGGIE STIEFVATER! I just finished Blue Lily, Lily Blue yesterday (months after most of the rest of the fan base, because although it released in October 2014, I got a copy for Christmas) and it was GLORIOUS. The series also seems like your kind of thing and I really hope you enjoy The Dream Thieves and Blue Lily, Lily Blue as much as The Raven Boys! (And all the rest of your stack of Christmas books, too!)
ReplyDeleteAs for recommendations, I'm also going to suggest The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, because if you haven't read this one then you MUST. It's about people on an small, wild, and untamed island who race flesh-eating water horses every November. It's based off of Celtic mythology and is seriously SO GOOD. I also have some more suggestions, though there are quite a few so feel free to pick and choose, of course: Egg and Spoon by Gregory Maguire, which is historical fantasy set in tsarist Russia that puts a quirky and hilarious twist on Slavic mythology; Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, a high fantasy series set in a Russia-based fantasy world; Love in the Time of Global Warming by Francesca Lia Block, a diverse post-apocalyptic retelling of Homer's Odyssey; The Archived by Victoria Schwab, which is one of the most unique fantasy concepts I've read in a long while (featuring a dimension where "the dead rest on shelves like books"!); and The Ocean at the End of the Lane because it's by Neil Gaiman and it's weird and wonderful and need I say more?
