To All Those Affected by Hurricane Sandy

I've been tracking the news of Hurricane Sandy since I spotted a funny-looking patch of swirly air on the weather report a few nights ago. From what I can tell, there's a dirty great storm surge coming in on the coast, as well as the usual high winds, flying debris and general potential for havoc.

I've never been in anything close to a hurricane, so I can only imagine how scared people are right now. Those who aren't sprinting out of danger areas during evacuations are stuck at home, under the threat of losing all power, with a storm barrelling towards them.

I was on Tumblr earlier, and it was full of people sending panicky "may lose power soon, so freaked out!" posts, or ridiculous things like "making pancakes in the hurricane, haha!". It might be my paranoid imagination, but I couldn't help but read those in a panicky hysterical voice.

And for every panicked message I saw on Tumblr, there were a thousand responses asking if they were alright, that people were there to talk to if need be. I even saw a few rescue offers, here and there.

They're not alone. I know at least one of my followers lives in a threatened area on the east coast, possibly in Sandy's path.

If you can read this, I'm thinking of you. And your families, and your homes.

I'll be keeping watch on Sandy tomorrow, too. I watched tonight, and from what little I could deduce from the report, it looks to be dissipating by sometime tomorrow. Whether this is accurate or not, I don't know. But I hope it is.

Stay safe, people. I'm thinking of you.

    1. It's downgraded to Superstorm and is gonna die out apparently as it heads inland - causing a few blizzards in the north, but I think peeps are pretty used to that.

Nasty thing's not a hurricane any more, though, at least!

  4. Yeah, Sandy looks pretty bad... I don't have any relations on the East Coast, but a few friends... praying they'll all stay safe.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know I can't email with Microsoft Outlook. Is it ok if I just have your email directly? On here or on my blog? You can post it and then delete it if you don't want it shared as soon as I email you! :D

Ok, so this will be for the guest post in two weeks (second Tuesday in November), so you have plenty of time to write out however much you'd like. The "subject" I'd like you to cover is about "targeting your audience". You've done some posts in the past that made me think you'd be the best woman for the job!!! ;) Keep it related to all writing matter, since I have people who write all manner of stuff on the blog (poets, fantasy writers, historical fiction, steampunk...) yes, even though at the moment there are only 11 bloggers on it... :D If you'd like any suggestions or help, just let me know! Thanks for being willing to do this and I can't wait to see what you write! (And, my email address is heroineofthefaith@yahoo.com when you want to send it to me.)

  5. I've been freaking out all evening because I have SO MANY internet friends in the affected areas. I'm sitting there going, "Come on, guys. Report in. Let me know you're alive." But of course they've all lost power so I'm not hearing anything.

    1. Indeed . . . it's a waiting game. Though the fatality count is low, at least. The rest . . . we shall wait and see.

  6. Hurrican's are funny beasts. I've spent most of my life on the East Coast, specifically in the North West part we call New England.

I'll tell you what - I'll take a Hurrican over a tornado any day. Tornadoes are scarey freaky screaming beasts that are basically concentrated hurricanes, and cause way more damange int he areas they pass trhough.. But on the other hand a Hurrican is more wide spread, thus it could actually do more damage than a tornado, but it's just spread out more... Anwyay wehre was I going... ah yes.

As I"ve never lived through the worst of a Hurrican, they aren't all that scarey. I've never been flodded out of my house, or lost power for a week (or more). I'm lucky like that (though I ddid recently get my first speeding ticket... I hope that's not a trend).

I still think that there's always more hype when there should be less, and not enough when there shoud be more - but I also think that we've been scared by Katrina, the Hurricane that devistated New Orleans and the surrounding region.

Ah well - so far all of my east coast friends and family seem to have surrvived with little hardships (many have generators, like we do now).

    Thanks for the hobbit hugs. :}

    1. Ehehe, I've never been in either, but I can see your point - tornadoes look scary as heck!

Good to know - I'm sending lots of tea-and-crumpet hugs over to the east coast right now. Not to mention to Haiti and the islands down there, they got hit pretty bad too. Tragic that. :(
